ADOLESCENt PILATES

“In childhood, habits are easily formed - good and bad. Why not then concentrate on the formation of only good habits and thus avoid the necessity later on in life of attempting to correct bad habits and substituting for them good habits'“

Children & young adolescents participating in Pilates learn physical skills while incorporating body awareness through disciplined focus, concentration, coordination, healthy breathing, mindful and controlled movement. Pilates promotes the connection between building strength and flexibility on the one hand and developing conscious awareness of the body on the other. Ultimately, the practice of Pilates fosters excellence in mental fitness, emotional intelligence, physical well-being and social competence.

Pilates is a unique practice that focuses on foundational and functional movement skills, which challenges and stimulates the student while integrating the body and mind through a series of specific exercises. Pilates can be taught in a manner that is fun for young people, and it readily complements traditional exercise regimes.

Some other benefits of Adolescents Pilates include:

  • Override the bodies phycological response to stress

  • Initiate the relaxation response and invigorate the nervous system by means of concentrated and focused breathing

  • Integrate all the body’s systems to bring students into an energized, alert state

  • Organise whole brain function for optimal learning.

  • Raise levels of all chemical ‘messengers’ known to balance behaviour and inhibit hunger

  • unify the cognitive and motor regions of the brain critical to strengthening our attention and coordination, by the introduction of cross-lateral movements.

  • Create a fun, harmonious, and safe way to learning and developing group dynamics and social skills

  • Reduce stress, increase mind and body fitness and develop key elements of lifetime such as self-awareness, self-care & self-management.

At Pointe, our classes are 30mins long, run in conjunction with the school term and are aimed at adolescents aged 9-13 years. These years are considered the ‘Magic Window’ and refers to a child’s nervous system being highly adaptable prior to puberty, giving their learning/development an opportunity to excel. Our teaching method is based on the individual child & progressively increasing levels of coordination when they are ready.
